Breaking changes

The database schema regarding server URLS has changed. Therefore it may be necessary to delete the BitRitter config file. Very old versions - like from 2024 - had several locations, which can usually be ignored/deleted by now. In newer versions it is located at XDG_CONFIG_DIR/bitritter/vault_settings.db3. You can test if your installation handles the update well, but if you cannot login anymore, please delete the file mentioned above and create a new vault in the app.

Bug fixes

  • Vault Items which are in an Organisation should now be decrypted correctly. There is still one edge case, which we could not pin down, so if you are affected, please open an issue with information about the Item (Is it in a folder? In how many collections is it?).
  • Copying information from the Detail Page should now work with most Wayland compositors. Should it not work for you (even if you are on X11), please open an issue with info about your Desktop Environment and compositor if you know which is in use.

UI Improvements

  • A spinner is shown when decrypting and syncing items, so you know the app did not crash. Usually it should not take longer than a few seconds even on older devices, since we sped up the decryption times by a big margin.
  • Vault creation dialog is now easier to handle, especially for BW cloud users since you do not need to enter server URLs for those. Also the dialog now follows the GNOME HIG. Also, there are some validations in place - for example email is parsed for valid address format - before you can submit the dialog.
  • List menus like Search, Sort and Filter have been reworked to fit more closely to the HIG.
  • Alot of components are now styled with modern libadwaita components where applicable
  • An About dialog can be found in the Main Menu
  • BitRitter has its own icon

Backend Improvements

  • Decryption does not decrypt the whole vault before showing the list anymore. This should bring speed improvements on initial unlocking, aswell on syncing manually. This also has some security improvements, since only the currently selected Vault Item on the Detail Page is decrypted in memory.

New features

  • App based MFA has been implemented. Should you use this mechanism (like TOTP), you will now be prompted with a second input for this code after submitting your password.
  • You can now switch between active vaults with the new Vault Switcher, found in the Main Menu (Burger menu). All vaults, which are set up with BitRitter should be found there. The currently active one is marked by a check mark and cannot be selected. Switching vaults locks the previously active one due to security reasons.
  • Translations have switched to the Fluent framework. Several languages have already been translated via the Weblate instance on Codeberg. Information about this can be found on our Translations page.
  • Window size should now be remembered accross restarts

Noteworthy

  • We have made flatpak packaging available for BitRitter. Currently you can build it locally for yourself, soon it might become available via Flathub. Watch for infos on this topic either in the Fediverse at #BitRitter, in the repository (#67) or on this website.
  • CI is being worked on, so soon it should be possible to automate that changes in the main branch are directly updating the newest binary builds and maybe also flatpak updates
  • Besides all the things listed above, alot of work has been put into building the groundwork for the long awaited Edit Mode, where you can create or edit Vault Items. Stay tuned!
