We are live! 🎉

A first step.

Here we are now.

Started in 2024 as a hobby project scratching an itch. Meanwhile, the project has grown to a small community of users and contributors (not all by code!).

Still being a hobby project, progress has stalled a bit over the years. To counter this and attract more users and thus maybe possible contributors, we have set up this website for more visibility. In addition, the focus in development shifted from raw features to more accessibility - translations to help non-english speakers use the app easier. Also the task to bring BitRitter to more package managers, e.g. Flathub/Flatpak and Nix has made some big progress in the last weeks. Mostly with the help and initiaton of community members.

With my talk at the postmarketOS conference, which does not cover much of BitRitter itself, but rather the road from its incarnation until now, could lead to more visibility.

So the creation of this website is not purely a requirement for a listing at certain package managers, it is a step towards a more professional/polished image. Reading a documentation in a README file can be enough for getting started, but a deeper dive into the internals can be better represented here.

So, what will become of the project in the future?

It will still be a hobby project maintained mostly by Chfkch, but since contributions from other people has worked so good, we hope to keep this up or even increase in the future.

After the accessibility (i know this word is a bit out of context in this article...) conversion is complete, the main focus will again be the way to reach feature parity with the official clients. There have been big steps made to implement the long awaited Edit Mode, but since it is a discrete topic - nobody wants to lose or corrupt their vault data - it is handled with the most care.

After this is done, a roadmap will be created - maybe together with the community? - which features should be developed next.

Wishful thinking

Some persons on the Modal collective working towards an autofill portal for linux. I can hardly imagine better test chambers than password managers like BitRitter. But here we are speaking of years instead of weeks or months before there will be a full fledged implementation i think. Who knows.

How do you fit in?

In the past, it was very unclear to me how many people use the app at all or to what extend. Since we do not want to implement telemetry - especially in a sensitive tool like a password manager - the only way to know about the userbase is direct communication. So if you have a problem, tell us.

If you use the app, wether you like it or not, maybe write a short toot on the Fediverse. Even emails are appreciated.
